As the only vehicle in the final group of contenders for the Automotive X Prize 100 mpg challenge that actually looks like a typical car--four wheels, a full body, normal side-opening doors--the Electric RaceAbout EV should hold a special place in the history books despite not taking one of the winning spots.

This video gives it that place, detailing the car and the team of University of Helsinki professors and students behind its design and construction.

Powered by a 33 kilowatt-hour lithium-titanate battery pack, the RaceAbout features all-wheel drive, a carbon fiber monocoque, and a recharge time of just 10 minutes.

  1. I thought this was the best looking of ANY of the cars at the MIS during the last open day for public viewing of the test stages. It looks even better than any of the pictures AND according to a report I just saw, it was actually second in the final scoring. Produced at anything less than $40K and it would actually sell anywhere in the industrial world, IMHO.

    Bad stuff?

  2. Electric RaceAbout EV evidently has in-wheel motors, and presumably avoids power losses related to transmissions and drive shafts. I would really like to hear more about the drive system, computer controlls, etc.
Honda, GM and Mitsubishi have all played with wheel motors, unsprung weight and road shock issues seem to have been solved but wheel motors are very slow getting to market. Protean electric has great wheel-motor graphics on their web site,http://www.proteanelectric.com/live/
