The 2017 Smart ForTwo Cabrio convertible will start at $19,650 when it goes on sale in the U.S. this fall.

That price—which includes a $750 destination charge—is for the base Pure Passion trim level with 5-speed manual transmission.

Smart says the 2017 ForTwo Cabrio is the only convertible available in the U.S. with a base price below $20,000.

Selecting the optional 6-speed dual-clutch transmission bumps the price up to $20,640.

In addition to the base Pure Passion model, Smart also plans to offer higher-level Prime and Proxy trim levels.

All ForTwo Cabrio models use the same 0.9-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder gasoline engine, which sends 89 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels.

EPA fuel-economy ratings for the Cabrio aren't available yet, but they should be fairly close to those of the Smart ForTwo coupe.

That model is rated at 36 mpg combined (34 mpg city, 39 mpg highway) with the dual-clutch transmission, and 35 mpg combined (32 mpg city, 39 mpg highway) with the manual.

The hardtop Smart underwent a full redesign for the 2016 model year, the convertible took a one-year hiatus.

In addition to switching over to the new Smart platform, the 2017 Cabrio gains a "Tritop" roof mechanism that can be configured three ways: fully open, fully closed, and partially open, like a big sunroof.

The roof takes 12 seconds to retract, and can be activated from outside the car using the key fob.

The folding mechanism is automatic, but drivers must manually remove and stow side bars to fully open the roof.

This is a redesigned version of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, which is scheduled to debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

It replaces the current Electric Drive, which is based on the previous-generation ForTwo platform no longer used by the gasoline models.

Like the current model, expect the next-generation Electric Drive to be offered as a coupe and convertible.

UPDATE: The ForTwo Cabrio will be offered only in Passion, Prime, and Proxy trim levels only, with no Pure model as stated in the original version of this article.
