Will Nissan's 2014 Le Mans Race Entry Be A Full Electric Car?

Every year, the organizers of the 24 Heures du Mans--the world's most famous and prestigious endurance race--set aside a special garage for a car that pushes technological boundaries.

Garage 56, as it's known, has hosted some spectacular vehicles.

This year will see a hydrogen vehicle occupy Garage 56, but for 2014 it's Nissan's turn--and the company's entry could be a full electric vehicle.

It's not the first time Nissan has entered an unusual vehicle. Most prominent in recent years was 2012's Nissan and Highcroft Racing DeltaWing.

The Batmobile-like creation had half the power of a typical Le Mans Prototype but also half the weight--and was running strongly, using very little fuel and with hardly any tire wear, until an accident caused it to retire.

But 2014's entry could be even more groundbreaking.

We can't be sure it's a full battery-electric vehicle--the company's press release doesn't state that exactly. However, with hybrid vehicles already fielded by Audi and Toyota, a plug-in vehicle is the next logical step for electric technology on the circuit.

Specifically, Nissan says, "Nissan is targeting a return to the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2014 with a pioneering Nissan race car showcasing electric technology."

During the opening of Nissan's new headquarters in Yokohama, Japan, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn added, "We will return to Le Mans with a vehicle that will act as a high-speed test bed in the harshest of environments for both our road car and race car electric vehicle technology."

The project will be led by NISMO, the Nissan Motorsports arm which developed the LEAF RC race car concept.

Following Ghosn's announcement, Nissan is expected to reveal further details of the project in the near future.

  1. I hate to be negative but I hope the hydrogen race car doesn't make it. But it would be interesting if Nissan is able to field a full electric race car, but Le Mans is tough even the best race cars can breakdown just from the punishment of racing for twenty four hours. It makes you wonder if it is fully electric does that mean Nissan has discovered a new breakthrough technology they're not telling us about yet? Hmm.

    I think that hydrogen car are the futur as they can provide a longer range than a typical EV with battery, the refueling is very short, and hydrogen car by created using solar energy or wind.

  3. Having a hydrogen car race would just be a waste of time, it won't change anything. It won't contribute anything, it will just be a show because it won't help hydrogen over come any of it's hurtles. EV technology is in a better position to gain from what's learned on the track and apply it to road going cars. And the reasons you think hydrogen is the future are not that different from electric cars. Electricity can be generated through wind and solar. As for charge times and range that will change you have to remember most "typical" EVs are only in their first generation, given time to evolve charging and range will not be an issue. Electricity is already plentiful and ready to go, hydrogen is still largely nonexistent.
