Recently, Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu has been delivering a wave of commencement speeches at various universities. During a speech at CalTech last week, he is quoted as saying we needed to prepare for the "inevitable transition to electricity as the energy for our personal transportation."

Inevitable. That one word probably sums up Secretary Chu's level of commitment to nudging the transition from traditional fossil-fuel vehicles to less polluting, more efficient electric or alternative-fuel vehicles.

His stance on hydrogen fuel cells is well known (he finds them to be expensive and inefficient), so, not surprisingly, hydrogen didn't get a mention in this speech.

  1. I have a lot of respect for Secretary Chu. Credentials don't get much more impressive than his. I know that he can help us to make it so.

    Bad stuff?

  2. Perhaps Secretary Chu needs to read up on the Riversimple Urban Car, developed with Amory Lovins direction. It is a fuel cell vehicle with ultracaps and 4 in-wheel motors, so writing off hydrogen is foolish.

  4. Sorry, "suspects". I count myself as a prime one, hehehe.
Isn't Amory Lovins the Rocky Mountain Institute (or whatever it is) guy? Didn't i see him on PBS with the Tappet Brothers? Lightweight carbon fiber bodies and chassis? I'll take one.

  5. The article and JMH missed Secy's Chu's point. It's electric drive that's inevitable for inexpensive superior smooth quiet efficient torque at all times, simplicity durability and less maintenance, the qualities of luxury performance vehicles. If hydrogen (or any energy carrier/source we want to mix/match) ever makes sense, EREV generators can use it for the vehicle's electric drive. We have hundreds of millions of electrical outlets available now.

  6. Folks reading this article on hydrogen fuel cell computers might disagree with it.
