The 2010 Tag Heuer Tesla Roadster made its way to Moscow last week. It is the first electric car, and the first car not made with Russian parts, to park in Moscow's famous Red Square.

The 2010 Tesla Roadster seems to have made quite a stir in Russia. Last Thursday, it was the star of a VIP celebration at Moscow’s Autoville Museum.

Tesla technician Luke McClure, who is driving the Roadster across three continents as part of Tesla's and Tag Heuer's "Odyssey of Pioneers" journey, said, “It was humbling to be granted the honor of parking in Russia’s most hallowed ground."

"At the same time," he continued, "we have been mobbed by fans excited to see the Roadster in person.” The electric sports car has also visited Monaco, Milan and Budapest thus far.

The stopover in Budapest was part of an homage to Nikola Tesla, who came up with the design the alternating-current induction motor in 1882. Over a century later, the Tesla Roadster is powered by an AC induction motor descended from the scientist’s original vision.

Where is the Tesla Roadster charging during its global trek?  Tesla reports that it has charged from standard outlets at hotels, a solar panel array in Italy, even at a barn in rural Switzerland.

The trip is intended to demonstrate that plug-in cars are a viable option today and do not need a whole new charging infrastructure.

A cross-country feat such as this is a huge boost not only for Tesla Motors, but also for the electric vehicle industry as a whole. This type of demonstration may stimulate the kind of government funding and market interest that leads to the birth of local electric vehicle industries around the world.
