Following similar announcements from A Better Place partners across the globe, Hawaii released tentative partnership plans with the Palo Alto-based company to install a network of quick-change battery swapping stations across the Big Island.

It makes perfect sense, actually, since drivers on the island rarely make car trips of more than 100 miles, perfect for EV driving. The Hawaiin market is relatively small, with fewer than a million and a half cars on the road and about a tenth of those replaced each year. As an island economy, Hawaii's energy costs are very high (they pay more at the gas pump than just about anyone else in the U.S), making it a place that will welcome the new technology and its up-front investment with open arms.
