Chevy announced pricing for the 2009 Silverado Two-Mode Hybrid pickup today. The 2WD model starts at $38,995 plus a $975 destination charge and gets 21 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The 4WD model will get 20 mpg city and highway and likely add about $3,000 to the price.

"For customers who need a full-size truck, but want much better fuel economy, the Silverado Hybrid is the clear answer," said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet. "It offers over 40-percent greater efficiency in city driving and a 25-percent overall increase in fuel economy, without compromising power or towing capability."

While the hybrid's fuel economy is significantly better than that of the standard half-ton Silverado, the towing capacity decreases from 10,700 lbs to 6,100 lbs. Chevy offered no details on which trailering savvy customers will be willing to pay a $12,000 premium for a 43% reduction in towing capacity.
