Before the end of this year, Ford expects sales of vehicles equipped with turbocharged EcoBoost engines to top 1 million for the first time.

So far for 2015, sales are up 46 percent, the carmaker said in a recent press release.

The EcoBoost engines use turbocharging and direct injection to increase power, which has allowed Ford to downsize engines in a variety of models as it aims to increase fuel economy.

As of this year, Ford offers at least one EcoBoost engine option in each light-duty passenger vehicle in its U.S. lineup--except the hybrid-only C-Max.

Through October, the F-150 full-size pickup truck accounted for the most EcoBoost sales, with 210,239 EcoBoost-equipped models sold in the U.S.

The Escape had the second-most EcoBoost sales--at 203,855--followed by the Fusion, with 105,999 sold.

Ford says these totals equate to 64 percent of F-150 sales, 78 percent of Escape sales, and 43 percent of Fusion sales.

Two of the four engines offered in the F-150 are EcoBoost units, as are two of three engines offered in the Escape.

Two out of three engines in the Fusion lineup are also EcoBoost units, although Ford also offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants that use non-EcoBoost gasoline engines.

A 3.0-liter V-6 exclusive to the Lincoln luxury brand will launch in 2016. Other EcoBoost engines are already used by Lincoln.

Ford also uses EcoBoost engines in performance vehicles, including the Mustang, Fiesta ST and Focus ST hot hatchbacks, and the Taurus SHO sedan.
