..."I like this one," Kafi said. "I could be happy with this one." Binta refused to vacate the driver's seat for me or her sister. That spoke volumes. Binta is a car nut. She doesn't suffer boring cars -- those with sluggish acceleration, mediocre steering and handling -- lightly. With those, she relinquishes the steering wheel quickly. "I'm tired, Dad. You drive," she'll say. Or, she'll give her younger sister "a chance to drive." But not this time. With the Saturn Vue XR, she retained control with the tenacity of a dictator. "Is this really a Saturn?" Binta asked. I answered "Yes and no," the...

...Because the electric motor cannot power the Green Line on its own — and it doesn't provide a great deal of low-speed assist — gas mileage is higher in the city than on the highway, which is opposite of most full hybrids. ...That Vue starts at $21,875, so given the test Green Line's out-the-door sticker of $24,795, and that includes a lot of equipment, going Green Line won't cost you that much more green. A substantial part of the Vue Green Line's thrift comes not just from the hybrid powertrain, but other, smaller adjustments, such as the low-rolling-resistance tires ("hard," in other words), and some aerodynamic tweaks, such as a special rear spoiler. There is nothing particularly sophisticated about the 2.4-liter gas engine, or its behind-the-times four-speed automatic transmission, but it all works well...

...It doesn't feel like a race car, but it holds its own on the highway, with good acceleration for a 4,000-pound vehicle. The six-speed automatic was smooth through the gears, and the sequential shifting -- known as Tap Shift by Saturn -- gave the Vue a sportier feel while zipping around the city. With 2008 EPA gas mileage at 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, the Vue is currently lower than some competitors such as 2007 Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Santa Fe and Honda CR-V. However, the CR-V only comes with a 2.4-liter four cylinder engine and the RAV4 and Santa Fe use 2007 EPA numbers. When...

...That's the engine in the Vue tested here, which was coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Later this year, we'll see the first of two hybrid Green Line models, and a higher-performance Red Line model. We first saw this 3.6-liter engine in a Cadillac, and it's a good one. It is nicely matched to the six-speed automatic; acceleration is very good. It's the standard engine in the top-of-the-line XR model. The XE front-wheel-drive Vue is the base model, with that 169-horsepower four-cylinder, and a four-speed automatic transmission. Get the all-wheel-drive Vue, and the engine becomes the...

...The Red Line's automatic transmission has manual tap up/down gear shifting, and a special sport-tuned suspension. In all models, the interior has been redesigned and refined, with many new features that GM says are "uncommon in the segment." Those include the optional eight-way power driver's seat; standard flip-down second-row armrest; standard AM/FM/compact-disc audio system with MP3 playback; optional automatic climate control; the optional navigation system with voice recognition; heated front seats; and a convenience package that adds rain-sensing wipers, remote start, a universal...

...Interior As with other recently redesigned models, like the Chevrolet Tahoe SUV and Buick Lucerne passenger car, GM has crafted a classy cabin for the Vue. The chrome-ringed air vents are very Audi-esque, and Saturn says the glove box is large enough to hold a medium-sized purse. There's also a sliding bin underneath the front passenger seat for odds and ends. Cloth seating surfaces are standard; leather seats are optional. Folding the 60/40-split rear seats expands the cargo area's 26.5 cubic feet of space to 54.3 cubic feet, but these seats don't slide fore and aft like those in the RAV4...

Folding the 60/40-split rear seats expands the cargo area's 26.5 cubic feet of space to 54.3 cubic feet, but these seats don't slide fore and aft like those in the RAV4. The backrest of the front passenger seat can fold flat so long items can be carried inside the cabin. Under the Hood The Vue Green Line uses the GM Hybrid System, which in this application features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder...
