2010 mercedes-benz s-class Professional Edmunds ReviewSource: Edmunds...A standard seven-speed automatic transmission routes power to the rear wheels. The S550 4Matic is all-wheel drive. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined with rear-drive and 14/21/17 with 4Matic. All V8-powered S-Class models get a seven-speed automatic transmission, while V12s are attached to a five-speed capable of handling their prodigious torque. The S400 Hybrid features a 3.5-liter V6 coupled to a mild hybrid system (an electric motor provides additional boost for acceleration but cannot motivate the car by itself). The result is 295 hp and 284 lb-ft... |

2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Massive backseat Optional infrared night vision system projects black-and-white video image on instrument cluster display Optional lane departure warning system and driver drowsiness monitor Under the Hood In addition to the hybrid V-6, available engines include two V-8s and two V-12s, all of which team with automatic transmissions. The S400 hybrid's lithium-ion battery pack is so compact that it fits under the hood and replaces the typical lead-acid battery. That means no loss of cargo or passenger space in the S400. S400 has a 3.5-liter V-6 and a seven-speed automatic with a total system... |

2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...the bottom as marker lamps - pierce into every rearview mirror on I-84 on my two-hour trip from central Connecticut to Boston. As airline pilots like to say, I was "making time," the radar cruise control set to repel every car out of the left lane. They obeyed. I switched on the night vision controls, which helped me see beyond the car's far-reaching swath of blue-white light. It's neat to see the analog speedometer - actually a widescreen, customizable LCD display - transform into a black-and-white infrared scan, but at highway speeds it confuses your depth perception. The camera is zoomed... |

2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...The S550's seven-speed automatic shifts smoothly, upshifting lickety-split when you press hard on the gas. (The S400, S550 and S63 have a seven-speed auto, but the S600 and S65 employ a five-speed.) It's not the best about kicking down to lower gears — the Jaguar XJ's six-speed automatic is better — but the V-8's prodigious torque means you can power out of a corner even in a higher one. The transmission offers a Sport mode, which holds lower gears longer and lessens the probability that you'll need a downshift. Should you need to, Sport mode still takes its time, unfortunately... |

2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...It is what the affluent world is coming to. Hybrid technology and everything it means for fuel conservation and reduced tailpipe pollution has moved upscale to Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac, among others. The filthy rich no longer need to restrict themselves to the likes of the humble Toyota Prius to prove that they are clean and green. If you think that this is all about the environment, or all about reducing our dependence on foreign oil, you are mistaken. It's mostly about image and marketing. For decades, engineers at Daimler and other European car companies eschewed the development... |
