...The six-speed automatic is standard. In Edmunds performance testing, a 2.4-liter GLS Sonata with automatic transmission accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds -- this is a full second quicker than the class average. The 2.0-liter turbo with automatic transmission is significantly quicker still, making the same dash in a class-average 6.7 seconds. The Sonata's EPA fuel economy estimates are equally impressive. The 2.4-liter engine is rated at 24 mpg city/35 mpg highway and 28 combined, regardless of transmission. In a long-term test with this engine, we managed to match the Sonata's...

...Freight runs $405. ABS is an expensive option because it is available only as part of a package, the cheapest of which runs $1,710, and includes cruise control and power sunroof, along with ABS. The highest-priced package runs $2,880 on the GLS, and, along with ABS, has compact disc player, power sunroof and leather seats. Packaging ABS like that serves two purposes: It allows Hyundai to keep the base price of its cars low by not offering ABS as standard, and it allows Hyundai to make even more money by teaming ABS with items you might not want, such as cruise control or leather seats. We'd...

...It seems those days are over. The Sonata GLS we sampled ran nearly $21,500. True, it was well loaded with automatic, sunroof, leather and power everything, but a similarly equipped Contour SE or Chrysler Cirrus is priced less than the Sonata. Considering Hyundai's quality record, we don't find the GLS to be a viable option in this class, particularly since the Contour/Mystique twins are a real kick in the pants to drive. That's not to say that the Sonata isn't a satisfying car. The doors thunk shut nicely, it is quiet and comfortable inside, and the leather makes it feel like a much more...

Dual airbags are standard. A 137-horsepower engine powers base and GL models while a 142-horsepower V6 is optional on midlevel GL and standard on GLS.

...These two engines offer an interesting contrast in the importance of cylinder head design. The V-6, despite being larger by almost 60 cubic inches, develops only slightly more horsepower than the four-cylinder. By virtue of increased air flow via four valves per cylinder, the 4 produces 137 horsepower to the V-6's 142 horsepower. There is, however, a quantum difference in torque between the two motors. With its greater disp lacement, the V-6 puts out 168 foot-pounds of torque to 128.7 foot-pounds for the 4. And the V-6 is going to be smoother in operation. In creating this new sedan, Hyundai...

...Will driving enthusiasts opt for the turbo because of its higher horsepower figures? Probably not. But its handling will sway the folks who dismissed the base Sonata for being too sedate. I still prefer the excellent V-6 engines offered by Honda, Mazda and even the Subaru Legacy over the Sonata, but it's by a slim margin. Shoppers may be swayed more by the impressive fuel economy numbers tacked on to the solid driving experience. At 22/33 mpg city/highway, it bests its V-6 competition by 3 to 7 highway mpg, and Hyundai's numbers came on regular unleaded gas unlike some other turbo power...

...The Sonata's performance is going to be pretty decent, whether in four-cylinder form or with the V6 that is optional with the GL and standard in the GLS. The in-line 4 is a 2.0- liter (122-cubic inch), 16-valve engine that produces 137 horsepower. The V6, despite being a 3.0-liter (182 cubic inches, 2,972 c.c), is rated at only five more horsepower. However, there's quite a difference in torque. The V6 is rated at 168 foot-pounds of torque, 40 more than the dual-cam 4, and that's what makes it possible to move away from stoplights in a hurry. There is, however, a lot of speed to the dual-cam...
