In Edmunds performance testing, a 2.4-liter GLS Sonata with automatic transmission accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds -- this is a full second quicker than the class average. The 2.0-liter turbo with automatic transmission is significantly quicker still, making the same dash in a class-average 6.7 seconds. The Sonata's EPA fuel economy estimates are equally impressive. True, it was well loaded with automatic, sunroof, leather and power everything, but a similarly equipped Contour SE or Chrysler Cirrus is priced less than the Sonata. Considering Hyundai's quality record, we don't find the GLS to be a viable option in this class, particularly since the Contour/Mystique twins are a real kick in the pants to drive. The V-6, despite being larger by almost 60 cubic inches, develops only slightly more horsepower than the four-cylinder. By virtue of increased air flow via four valves per cylinder, the 4 produces 137 horsepower to the V-6's 142 horsepower. There is, however, a quantum difference in torque between the two motors. But its handling will sway the folks who dismissed the base Sonata for being too sedate. I still prefer the excellent V-6 engines offered by Honda, Mazda and even the Subaru Legacy over the Sonata, but it's by a slim margin. The in-line 4 is a 2.0- liter (122-cubic inch), 16-valve engine that produces 137 horsepower. The V6, despite being a 3.0-liter (182 cubic inches, 2,972 c.c), is rated at only five more horsepower.
