But you don't need a degree in schematics to realize that the slower you move, the more likely the batteries are working. Or that going up hills takes more energy than going down. A non-hybrid Aspen Hemi is rated at 13 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway. The Aspen hybrid drives pretty normally. One way to cheat the lag is to activate the Tow/Haul mode on the column shifter, which effectively locks out electric mode and keeps the engine running. I found it especially useful — if not particularly fuel-efficient — for making left turns when there was a gap in oncoming traffic. The fact that I used it so often, however, is an indictment of the length of lag.
