...Both rows fold down to create more than 100 cubic feet of storage space. The automatic lifting tailgate is convenient, especially with an armful of groceries. Two clicks on the key and the back opens right up. But then you have to close it by hand -- that's not luxury, that's manual labor. Market may not be big enough The exterior is big, but nice. The straight lines on the hood seem out of place, like a long-lost design cue for a defunct sports car. But the other aspects of the vehicle, while big, are nice. It looks menacing from the front . Stretching more than 200 inches long, the Aspen...

...Hybrid-specific implements include a screen on the navigation system that shows real-time power flow between the drivetrain components — the battery, brakes and engine. Like many hybrids, the Aspen Hybrid has a charge-assist gauge whose dial swings to the left when the regenerative brakes are charging the battery and to the right when the electric motors and gasoline engine are working together to maximize acceleration. In between them is a green zone labeled "economy," which is similar to a gauge that promotes fuel-efficient driving in the Tahoe Hybrid. Under the Hood The Aspen's two-mode...

...Maybe something simple like a battery symbol that turns green or an engine symbol that turns red whenever in use? But you don't need a degree in schematics to realize that the slower you move, the more likely the batteries are working. Or that going up hills takes more energy than going down. It's fascinating to watch the instant mileage reading shoot from 13 m.p.g. to 25 m.p.g. when you're running on 4 cylinders. We even got it up to 35 m.p.g. holding at 50 m.p.h. in 4-cylinder mode-in a full-size SUV with three rows of seats for eight people. Ride was sufficiently soft to prevent bouncing...

...In my week of mainly city driving, the test truck's onboard computer showed an average of 18 mpg. A non-hybrid Aspen Hemi is rated at 13 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway. The Aspen hybrid drives pretty normally. The engine often shuts off when the vehicle is stopped, and initial acceleration is by electric motor as long as you use the throttle carefully. The Aspen is a luxurious SUV with a plush interior and a soft ride. The front seats offer excellent support. The instrument panel has elegant gauges, few seams and surface textures that are rich and inviting. The layout and design of the...

...The same thing happens in all full hybrids, though this model seems less adept at overcoming it. One way to cheat the lag is to activate the Tow/Haul mode on the column shifter, which effectively locks out electric mode and keeps the engine running. I found it especially useful — if not particularly fuel-efficient — for making left turns when there was a gap in oncoming traffic. The fact that I used it so often, however, is an indictment of the length of lag. Even less acceptable is the power lag on highways, where braking at just about any speed cuts engine power and sends the drivetrain...

CarGurus' Review for 2009 chrysler aspen

...The conventional Aspen is a viable option for those looking for a premium midsize SUV without wanting to pay the higher prices that usually accompany vehicles in this class.
However, the Hybrid still has too many issues to really warrant a recommendation, and the suspensions of both Hybrid and conventional configurations are very simply inadequate.
Perhaps the competition deserves a closer look...
