...The Cobalt SS gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that makes an impressive 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, but the only transmission available is a five-speed manual. In testing, we launched a Cobalt SS coupe from zero to 60 mph in a blistering 5.8 seconds. Fuel economy doesn't suffer much either, as it rates 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. Safety: Full-length side curtain airbags are standard on all Cobalts. Most Cobalts have a front-disc/rear-drum brake setup; SS models have performance-tuned four-wheel disc brakes. ...in a compromise, use an electric hydraulic pump rather than one driven off the engine. Whether it's the motor location or some other issue, GM hasn't gotten it yet. The main problem is in steering feel and the level of assist. In addition, the Cobalt SS' wheel snaps back to center too quickly after a turn, a distinctly unnatural characteristic. (It's even more frustrating because an electric system's assist level theoretically could be infinitely variable with speed or other factors.) ...The 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt is what it is, and that’s a good value for a compact car.
The styling won’t change the industry, and the performance isn’t blistering, but for relatively little money, you can walk away with a solid performer with impressive fuel economy.
With the SS going away, it’d be nice to see the option for four-wheel antilock disc brakes and traction control, but perhaps buyers will have to wait a while for that...
