2010 Toyota Corolla - Review

2010 Toyota Corolla

It also handles better than one might expect, with relatively low amounts of body roll and a decent amount of sprightliness in turn. Brakes are average at best, and the four-speed automatic transmission needs at least one more gear.

The interior is a bit bargain-basement, and the driver's seat is awkwardly positioned for taller folks like your author.  Still, all switches are easily reached, and everything works as advertised. Outside sound is kept where it belongs--outside.

Cargo space inside is a bit sparse, the center console is deep but not particularly big. One plus is that the extra storage area on top of the glovebox.

Trunk space is voluminous for a car this size, and there is a handy plastic compartment that holds excess stuff. I helped a friend move some household goods, and only one trip was needed, thanks to the copious trunk space.

Now it's time to answer the big question: How does the Corolla LE measure up in real-world fuel economy?

Well, factoring in city driving, traffic jams, and a couple of jack-rabbit starts, I averaged a terrible 15.9 mpg. It's important to note that in my almost 60 miles behind the wheel, I didn't have a chance for any long highway stints.

Nor did I spend much time above 40 mph. For those with long highway slogs or laconic suburban commutes, I'd expect the numbers to be closer to the EPA ratings.

For those who value high mileage at a low cost, with more than a dash of practicality, the Corolla makes sense. But for those who want their small cars with a dash (or two) of spice, well, fuel-efficient fun cars can be had from other manufacturers.
