The Ford Fusion Hybrid is in a category all its own when it comes to hybrid passenger cars. It is new for 2009 and offers an aggressive strong hybrid drivetrain.

Design
Unlike the Prius and Insight, the Fusion Hybrid doesn't look like a hybrid. Styling is the same as the gas-only Fusion sedan except for a very attractive hybrid decal. The car has a sleek and attractive athletic pure sedan appeal. The classic Ford wide plate chrome grille is appealing as is the general rake and stance.

Interior
The car is roomy and comfortable. The six way automatically adjustable leather seats are supportive and easy to relax in and get "just right."

Of the three most popular hybrids, the Fusion has the most beautiful and tastefully done driver interface. The traditional instrument cluster is evolved into a bright colorful LCD display that opens on either side of the central dial speedometer. It has a lot of custom configuration options from a minimalist to total gearhead.

One of the more interesting and useful elements is an EV mode envelope that shows you your potential to stay within EV only operation. That window widens and narrows based on driving conditions, and battery state of charge. A small line moves within it letting you know just where you would jump back into gas mode.

The center stack is refined, appealing and intuitive.

Another nice touch is the small floating back-up camera view that appears within the rear view mirror when in reverse. There are also rear mirror indicators if an object is approaching too close from the side and an audio sonar-type warning sounds if you are getting close to something in reverse.

  1. I have driven a Prius for 2 years now. I regularly get 47 mpg, on the highway 56. I think it's beautiful. So it beats the new ones. Yay!

  2. I would have liked a few more spec's about weight, battery, dash and indicators, etc.

  3. Nice job, Lyle. Ford has a winner regardless of what the Prius lovers have to say. If I were in the market for a new car, I would certainly give the Fusion Hybrid a good look. I just wish GM could have developed a car like the Fusion Hybrid along with the Volt. But, water under the bridge, I suppose.

  4. Prius and Fusion are not direct competitors. We wanted a quiet refined car. Fusion fits that bill better than Prius, Insight or Civic, has more personality, is more fun to drive and interact with. We love its refined interior, solid structure and normal driving dynamics. It's much roomier than our last compact car and beats the mileage significantly. We average 35mpg, despite full options. Our quick short trips may affect top mileage attainment. Longer juants yield 40mpg plus. Very happy so far.

  5. proid owner of a 2010 fusion hybrid and absolutely love this car! i was an avid saturn enthusiast and didn't ever want to drive a sedan... but with a one-year old son and wanting a hybrid, i looked and could not be more pleased with what we found. the car looks like a car and not a golf cart. the dashboard is stylish and very useful. the pickup is great. all around wonderful car!

  6. Is there any chance of a wagon variant of the Fusion?
I drive a hatchback now, and getting a bigger car doesn't seem like it would allow me to carry more stuff if I have to try to fit it into the trunk...

  7. I've test driven the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, and must admit that I am in love. The vehicle is well made, economical, and thoughtfully designed. If I could afford to purchase a new automobile today, the Fusion Hybrid would be choice number one.
