When Honda discontinued production of the first generation Insight hybrid in September 2006, it made people wonder if Toyota would always be at the top of the hybrid food chain. It wasn’t hard to see why Honda felt the need to redesign the Insight, especially when they had only sold 320 units in the first four months compared to 30,357 units of the Toyota Prius (Autoweek). Most of this was probably attributable to the difference in the setup of the two cars. The 4-door Prius was marketed to families, where as the Insight was a small two-door coupe that had very little room for anything more than two passengers.

Now Honda is back in the game with the introduction of the new 2010 Honda Insight, a slick 4-door hatchback that has come to capture a piece of the hybrid market share. According to our team here at TheCarConnection.com, the new 2010 Honda Insight is aimed at the younger and money conscious generation. A generation that is being faced with economic hardships that haven’t been a reality for more then two decades. And Honda wants to give it to them; the 2010 Insight is definitely a new car compared to the old the model of a decade ago, with 15.9 cubic inches of cargo space; seating for five and the ability to maintain a steady 30 mph cruise solely on electric power.

The interior has also been upgraded from other cars in its class and price range, with the introduction of a two-tone dashboard, cruise control, navigation system and a laundry list of other standard options. The LX model is the base model of the Insight, with the EX being an upgrade that adds a heap of extra options including steering wheel paddles, heated side mirrors and a USB interface, just to name a few.

Of course if you are considering the 2010 Honda Insight you probably are most interested in one final aspect: Miles Per Gallon. The 2010 Honda Insight has been rated at 40 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway. During TheCarConnection.com’s own road test the new car achieved an average of 44 mpg while navigating various roads and conditions. Optimal fuel economy is what this car is all about and to help you achieve it Honda has put a number of on-board systems to aid every consumer in their quest to be green. These systems include Eco Assist that changes the color of the speedometer from blue to green as your driving habits become more fuel-efficient. Eco Guide keeps track of your daily driving habits and accumulates a lifetime score.

All in all it looks like Honda has hit a home run right out of the environmentally friendly park.
