Toyota Recall

  • 2005 Toyota Prius

Toyota has announced the recall of 2.8 million vehicles worldwide to correct a steering fault found on some models. 670,000 Toyota Prius and Corolla models in the U.S. may suffer from an issue in the steering column. The faulty component may cause a knocking or rattling from the steering column intermediate extension shafts, and could cause a reduction in steering response. Toyota says that even in such circumstances, the vehicle will remain safe to drive. There have been no accidents or fatalities as a result of the issue, and only a handful of cases have been reported. The recall affects...

  • 2009 Toyota Prius

Toyota plans to service approximately 650,000 of the more than 2 million Prius hybrids it has built to date, to correct a potential flaw in a cooling pump that could cause overheating. About 390,000 of the affected models are in the U.S. While the company hasn't yet released details on what it calls a "service action," the number of vehicles suggests that the repair applies to the second-generation Prius. Those cars were built from models years 2004 through 2009. Toyota says it's not being compelled to recall the vehicles, but will do so under a new initiative to be more proactive in keeping...

Those Two So-Called Runaway Prius Cases? Cars Not At Fault

We thought we should provide a short update on two highly publicized so-called "runaway Toyota Prius" cases, one in San Diego and one in Harrison, New York. • 2005 Toyota Prius

Few automotive engineers believe in so-called "sudden acceleration". But until recently, there's been no way to determine what a driver what doing when he (or she) swears that he was pressing the brake pedal with all his strength even as the car accelerated. Now, that's changed. Federal investigators say the latest highly publicized incident--in which a 2005 Toyota Prius in the New York City suburb of Harrison, NY, accelerated across a street and into a stone wall on March 9--appears to be the fault of the driver. Black box: No brakes, full throttle The Event Data Recorder, or "black box," in...

Another day, another hybrid braking problem. Only this time, it's not Toyota. It's Ford.
