The big green car news from Chrysler yesterday was its announcement that it would build an electric version of the Fiat 500 mini-car for the U.S. market. Win one, lose one, perhaps. The company also dropped a death notice: It has ended development of its Ram Two-Mode Hybrid pickup truck, scheduled for introduction this year as a 2011 model. No business case "After closely evaluating the response to hybrid pickups in the marketplace, the company could not formulate an appropriate business case," Chrysler said in its release. So it "has decided to cancel development work" on the Two-Mode...

Four-Way Two-Mode Hybrid Project Ends, Lab Closes; Now What?
The Two-Mode Hybrid project was hailed as a model of technical cooperation when it was announced five years ago. But now the partners are going their separate ways, and the complex hybrid system may end up solely as a General Motors technology. GM said in late 2004 it would partner with Daimler and...

Forbes Calls Jeep Grand Cherokee Dirtiest Car, Readers Slam Methods
That old capitalist tool, Forbes magazine, has issued a list of the 10 dirtiest cars sold in the U.S. At the very top, in first place for filth, is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. But it turns out there are some problems with their list. There's history behind this. A decade ago, the website for Forbes...

Chrysler's Next Hybrid: 2011 Dodge Ram Hybrid Pickup Still On Track
While Chrysler was an original partner in development of the Two-Mode Hybrid system used in pickups and sport utilities by Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, as well as upcoming sport utilities from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, its hybrid history has not been happy. The company made fewer than 1,000 Dodge Durango...

August U.S. Light-Vehicle Sales Hit Highest MPG Since $4 Gasoline
Thanks to the strong financial incentives offered by the Cash-For-Clunkers program, the average gas mileage of new vehicles sold in the U.S. during August reached a record high: 23 miles per gallon, up 8 percent from the 21.2 mpg in August 2008. The calculations were done by the trade journal...

2010 Dodge Caliber: Fewer Engines, 30 MPG Highway, Better Interior
The Dodge Caliber hatchback has never been at the top of our compact-car list, in part because of its lousy gas mileage compared to the competition. Now, Chrysler has simplified its engine and drivetrain options to improve the gas mileage of the 2010 Dodge Caliber slightly, along with its platform...

Writers over at Car and Driver magazine had the chance to get behind the wheel of the 2011 Dodge Circuit EV. Their review, though mostly positive, also points out a few drawbacks associated with converting an existing model to a full EV. The ride of the concept car took place at the Chrysler Proving Ground in Chelsea, Michigan. Though concept vehicles are rarely turned over to journalists for ride and drives, Chrysler was more than willing to show off this one. The Dodge Circuit is based off of the Lotus Europa which is not sold in the states. The Europa is very similar to a vehicle...

The Green, The Bad And The Ugly: Our Least Favorite Green Cars
We like green cars, and we define the term loosely. Sure, the 2010 Toyota Prius is green. But so's the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid pickup truck, because a full-size truck that gets 20 miles per gallon is much easier on the planet when you need a pickup truck. But try as we might, there are a...

Cute AND Clever: Chrysler's Coming Green Innovations
Chrysler's on the skids right now, no doubt about it. June sales plummeted 42 percent, and some consider its takeover by--errr, sorry, partnership with--Italy's Fiat to be the blind leading the lame. But Fiat is far from the company it was 20 years ago, when it folded its tents and snuck out of the...

2010 Pontiac Vibe: The Last Pontiac Is The Greenest
As the world's battered automakers gear up for the 2010 model year, we say goodbye to a few outgoing models. Among them are the last Pontiacs, a brand General Motors will dispense with after 2010. The sole car offered to the public for the new model year will be the 2010 Pontiac Vibe, a five-door...

Spied: Dodge Ram Hybrid
The Hybrid HEMI is on the prowl again. The folks at Leftlane News got some new pictures of what will become Dodge's only hybrid model: the Ram pickup truck. This comes after Chrysler pulled the plug on hybrid versions of the full-size Aspen and Durango SUVs a short time ago. The Hybrid Ram uses...

Last month CNN told us that the Dodge Circuit would be Chrysler's first production ready EV. Today, according to Autocar, the Circuit has been cancelled. Fare thee well, Circuit. We hardly knew ya. After several auto show appearances, and an ad-campaign asserting that Chrysler was "building a new car company," it appears that the Circuit won't be in the plans. Chrysler's battery deal with A123 Systems indicates that electric vehicles will be part of their future in some capacity, but dropping the Circuit before it sees the sun would be especially disappointing for a company that needs...

You thought Chrysler's first EV was nothing more than a rebadged Lotus? You're wrong...so wrong.

Utterly disappointing sales haven't dissuaded Chrysler from working on new hybrids. Yesterday at the Chicago Auto Show, the troubled American automaker announced that a hybrid Dodge Ram pickup is still planned. It's expected that the new pickup will use the same two-mode hybrid system previously used in the discontinued hybrid Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen. This will be Dodge's first hybrid pickup, but fuel economy will likely be similar to that of the Chevy Silverado Hybrid which uses the same two-mode system. That truck gets 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway, which is respectable...
