Autumn is here, the leaves are changing and as the riding season winds down we continue our annual tradition of discussing what’s new for the Zero Motorcycles lineup of electric motorcycles.

This year Zero has a few surprises in store to broaden their bikes' appeal to new riders.

There are now 14 configurations of Zero Motorcycles ranging in price from $8,495 to $18,690.

The most powerful bike, the Zero SR, now has a whopping 116 ft-lbs of torque.

With a Power Tank range extender, the new Zero SR is rated at 202 miles of city travel and 101 miles at 70 mph—finally breaking the long-standing 100- and 200 miles-per-charge barriers.

Every Zero model gets more torque and power this year with an increase in the maximum current from the controller to the battery.

The Zero S and Zero DS lineups get a new model with a 6.5-kilowatt-hour battery with a marsupial-like pouch to store small items. A long-desired locking storage box is a welcome feature too.

The big deal about Zero's mobile app this year is that it will be able to update the firmware of 2017 models over the air.  Firmware updates used to require a visit to the local dealer, but now troubleshooting and fixes that involve firmware can be done at home.

The FX and FXS models can be configured with modular battery components or integrated batteries. Integrating them saves weight, but modular batteries can easily be swapped on the road or at home.

The drive belt is wider on this year's bikes than it was for 2016 and before, giving a more robust feeling to the ride.

Options for the tank area of four Zero models include a locking case, a Power Tank (3.3-kwh additional battery), a "charge tank" that delivers an increase of 2.5 kilowatts of additional charging power when plugged into a charging station.

The fit and finish of the entire lineup is improved this year, with higher-quality paint instead of parts with color molded in. Here's the full lineup.

Zero S and SR

The Zero SR is the most powerful electric motorcycle that Zero makes, now featuring 70 horsepower and a whopping 116 ft-lbs of torque.

That’s almost 10 percent more torque than last year's already powerful SR.

This model also features a permanent-magnet electric motor designed to withstand high temperatures better, so you can ride harder for longer.

Outfitted with Bosch ABS brakes (standard) and Showa shocks, the Zero S & SR models feature Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires for greater traction during spirited riding.

A new entry version offers a 6.5-kwh battery at a lower price point; it's a lighter bike for new electric-bike riders. It's rated at 60 hp and 81 lb-ft of torque, increased from last year's 54 hp and 61 lb-ft.

Options for this bike include a Power Tank that adds 3.3 kwh of battery capacity, and a Charge Tank that lets riders recharge fully in 2 to 3 hours.
