The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel marks a return of diesel engines to the Jeep brand after a hiatus of several years.

Sourced from Italy, where Chrysler's parent company Fiat has long experience with diesel engines, the 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque in Jeep's popular sport-utility vehicle.

The EPA rates the diesel Grand Cherokee at 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway when fitted with Jeep's four-wheel drive. If you opt for rear-wheel drive only, those numbers rise to 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway.

The new 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickup truck is the only light-duty (standard size) pickup truck offered in the U.S. market.

Chevrolet, Ford, and GMC all offer diesels in their heavy-duty pickup trucks, but Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) is the sole company to fit a diesel to its smallest full-size pickup.

The 1500 EcoDiesel uses the same 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel that's fitted to the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, along with the company's new eight-speed automatic transmission.

In its pickup truck guise, the clean diesel V-6 again puts out 240 horsepower and a substantial 420 lb-ft of torque.

That truck will go on sale later this year at Chrysler-Dodge-Fiat-Ram-SRT dealers, at a price $2,850 higher than a comparably equipped Ram 1500 with the Hemi V-8 gasoline engine.

Ram says owners can make back the higher purchase cost in fuel savings within three years, depending on how many miles the truck covers and the local price of diesel fuel.

While VW has provided details of its new diesel engine range, there are no new models with diesels introduced for the 2014 model year.

Next year, however, will be a different story, when the all-new 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI makes it debut.

There are other diesels coming as well, among them the highly anticipated first diesel from Mazda, which will fit its new SkyActiv-D diesel engine to its Mazda 6 mid-size sport sedan later this year.

  1. Explain to me please, how this technology, which is neither new nor expensive, should be sold at a premium by Automakers? Shouldn't there be a shift away from gasoline ICEs to diesel or natural gas? And shouldn't those cars be more attractive to buy because of immediate savings, not those which can be realized in 3-5 years? Heck, with immediate fuel savings, one might turnover a car in 2 years which would benefit the automakers.

    I just think these grand old manufacturers are senile in their sales and marketing strategy, and is another reason I own a Tesla Model S.

  2. @David: The diesel engine itself is not new, but the complex and expensive aftertreatment (including urea injection) to enable diesels to meet current North American emissions standards is new--and quite expensive.

    Automakers say that a diesel engine is about 15 percent more expensive to manufacture than a gasoline engine of the same output, largely due to its having to be stronger to withstand higher compression ratios. Then there's the aftertreatment and associated plumbing that have to be built into the vehicles.

    THAT'S why diesel models are more expensive.

  3. I doubt these regulations matter on diesel generators do they..? They seem to always be dirty and pretty cheap, starting at around a thousand and putting out much more power than a gas generator…

Besides aftertreatment (which gasoline engines also have...catalysts...although not as costly as the urea and particulate filters on diesels) they generally require larger & heavier components due to their high compression ratios, and more sophisticated fuel systems since power delivery isn't throttle controlled, rather fuel rate controlled. Materials and sophisticated components do cost something.

  5. @ John,

    Just to clarify, the previous (six cylinder) diesel version of the BMW 3 series was the 335d, not 328d. 328d is a new designation with the introduction of this model (even Europe doesn't have a 328d).

    I know because I have a 2010 335d. ;)

  7. if they could find a way to make use of the 80% wasted energy in the form of heat which is pertinent to all ICEs of any kind then i would probably give it a good looksie but otherwise, no thanks, electric trumps ICE as it currently stands.
