Convertibles seem to be all the rage in the news lately, from the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro convertible to the new Audi E-Tron Spyder debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show earlier today. You have probably heard me talk about the Audi E-Tron Concepts before and there is a good reason; Audi has a tendency to use this name for many concepts that are apart of the same study or vision. The newest concept is no exception.

The newest form of the Audi E-Tron comes in the form of a sleek spyder design; one we might add doesn’t have much of a windshield. Kind of  reminds us of a Porsche 356 Speedster from the rake of the windshield. The looks aside, the E-Tron continues the showcase of Audi plug-in hybrid technology with this concept mating the hybrid powertrain to Audi’s 3.0-liter turbo diesel (TDI) engine. Audi claims the TDI puts out a pretty impressive 300 horsepower with the two additional electric motors adding another 85 horsepower.

How fast is it? Try 0-62 mph in about 4.4 seconds. What is its top speed. 155 mph. How about fuel economy from such a performance oriented machine? Audi claims that this concept is capable of achieving 128.4 mpg making the total range for this hybrid right about 621 miles on a single tank of fuel. It almost sounds to good to be true; the wind in your hair, adrenaline in your veins and money left in your wallet…that is until we find out the purchase price. Even without a price estimate, we do know that production is slated to begin “mid-decade.”
