Nissan Motor Co. is launching a gasoline-electric hybrid version of its Infiniti M 35 sedan later this year, and hopes to nearly double the fuel mileage of the gasoline version, while keeping costs down.
"We're aiming for an improvement of 60 to 90 percent,” said Koichi Hayasaki, chief engineer of Nissan's rear-wheel-drive hybrid system, using a unique one-motor, two clutch system.
Nissan has lagged behind its competitors on an in-house hybrid vehicle; it said the system took six years to develop and required millions of test miles. CEO Carlos Ghosn first announced the company's hybrid plans last fall.
Nissan’s hybrid system uses an extra clutch separating the electric motor from the engine. Once the battery is charged, the second clutch allows the car to be driven completely on electric power, greatly improving fuel economy.
This technology will be coupled with a start-stop feature, along with newer electronic controls that will allow the engine to idle more frequently.
The new system is also 66 pounds lighter than Toyota’s parallel Hybrid Synergy Drive system, which is currently used in the 2010 Nissan Altima Hybrid.
