Sparky the Voltswagen

Do you ever wish your car came in an electric version? Do you find yourself daydreaming about bio-diesel conversions? If so, the bloggers at Inhabitat have assembled a list of vehicles to inspire you. The so-called "Top 5 Pimped-Out Eco Rides" range from a Hummer H1 stretch-limo to a 1985 Chevy S10 pickup. Three of the five rides put electricity to work.

The aforementioned S10 has an 11kW solar array and battery system designed by the University of Maine, which is good for up to 100 miles on a single charge.

The Hummer, which was modified by engineer, Russel Gehrke, runs on a combination of bio-fuel and electricity captured by rooftop solar panels.

A modified 1973 Volkswagen Beetle (aptly called Sparky the Voltswagen), is owned by Manitou High School. The converted vehicle uses 12 volt batteries for power and serves the school's driver's education program.

And you thought your best option was a Prius.
