Mazda To Get (More) Hybrid, Electric Technology From Ford? Page 2

2008 Mazda Tribute Hybrid

Back to the future?

If Mazda does end up offering hybrid or even electric cars of its own design,  we humbly suggest the company may wish to revisit a much older advertising slogan.

Back in the 1970s, Mazda made its name by offering the sporty, rotary-engined RX-2 and RX-3 coupes, sedans, and even station wagons.

They were fast for small cars, and their rotary engines were so smooth that they became the tagline of a memorable campaign: "Piston engine goes boing-boing, but the Mazda goes hmmmm ..."

Sadly, right around the time their rotor-tip seals began leaking oil and then failing entirely, the 1973 oil crisis hit. Mazda hastily retooled to produce more conventional piston-engined cars, and only the 2009 Mazda RX-8 is left to fly the rotary banner.

But for your viewing pleasure, below, is an early TV ad for the the 1973 Mazda RX-3. Sounds like electric drive to us, hmmmm?

    Bad stuff?

  2. What???? Rotary engines have apex seals, and they dont leak oil. The engines are also quite reliable and the reason they cut down production is because of bad fuel economy and tightening emission standards.

  3. Editor in chief? Come on, we expect more from you boss, learn to research, maybe even go out for a drive, may I suggest an FD RX7? The flag is unfurled, and flying high.

  4. Rotor-tip seal must be a new term? Seriously if you can't even be bothered using a search engine to appear like you know what you're talking about, don't bother talking at all.
