Contrary to blogosphere speculation, Edmunds has confirmed that there will be no electric Audi R8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. An Audi spokesperson who wished to remain anonymous told Edmunds that rumors starting in the European automotive press (and perpetuated by yours truly) are not true.

Both Auto Motor und Sport and L'Automobile reported that a battery powered R8 concept would be displayed next to the upcoming Spyder convertible in Frankfurt. The Spyder is still expected to be there.

This isn't much of a revelation, but it is disappointing. The EV supercar market could use an entry from a major automaker - especially one dedicated to performance and style like Audi.

Apparently the likes of Tesla and Fisker can rest easy for now. Or maybe that's what Audi wants them to believe. We're just kidding. Or are we?
