Tesla is determined to make electric transportation a mainstream reality. Exhibit A: this Smart Fortwo outfitted with their Roadster's powertrain. Doug King, of the Tesla Motors Club took a short ride in the Fortwo and was kind enough to post numerous photos and a video of the quick trip.

This isn't just a photo op either. Tesla intends to provide battery packs to Daimler for 1,000 Smart EVs which are scheduled for production this December. Those EVs will have a range of 100-miles and will hopefully provide peppier acceleration than the gas-powered Smart, which makes a Chevy Aveo look fleet of foot.

Then again, this is a car designed for city dwellers, so a zero-emissions platform that doesn't sacrifice interior volume should be widely appealing to the target demographic. We shall see.
