MINI E Test Drive

BMW has produced several hundred electric MINI cars, so-called MINI Es.  While not greenlighted as a production vehicle, these prototypes are being handed out to willing test drivers across the globe.

The Financial Times has published the experience of one test driver.  The car uses an A/C Propulsion electric drivetrain mated to a 35 kwh battery pack weighing about 550 pounds that replaces the rear seat.

The author describes  getting into the car, turning the key, and hearing that glorious...nothing.  He goes on to describe the acceleration experience as "damn fast" obviously enjoying the thrill of instantaneous torque.  You see there is no slow build-up of acceleration seen with conventional combustion engine cars.

The author noted he did his best to drain the range by driving with a lead foot, and blasting the heat, etc, but acknowledged that all-electric range never showed a sign that it couldn't go at least 100 miles on a charge.  BMW notes the range to be 150 miles.  Recharge takes 2-1/2 hours with a 48 amp garage wall box.

Of course this car isn't for sale, it is simply being given out for a one year trial lease to 500 people in the US for $850 per month.  The application process has ended and notifications are already being made. And no I haven't heard about mine..it doesn't look good.

  2. Novelty is equipped with a system, allows you to charge the batteries during braking, while energy is enough for 50 kilometers. The machine is equipped with a remapped compared with the gasoline version of the suspension, since mass of new items because of the batteries has increased by 400 kilograms and has reached 1,465 kilograms.
