BMWs Mini has been discussing the launch of a new street-legal electric car that will be launched in North America in Jaury 2009.
It is basically a retrofitted
MINI that has an electric motor and drivetrain supplied by A/C propulsion. It will house a 35 kwh lithium-ion battery that will replace the rear seat. The motor is 205 hp and will propel the car 0 to 60 in 8.5 seconds. Of that 35 kwh, only 28 kwh will be used for driving, obtaining an efficiency of 5.4 miles per kwh and range of 150 miles.
The lithium-ion cells will be supplied by E-One Moli.
The cars will be built in Oxford beginning in 2008 and be leases to 450 customers in NY, NJ, and CA. Of those, 250 will be in the greater LA area.
The lease price is $850 per month for 1 year, and drivers will participate in providing data to
BMW for the verification process.
