Motor Trend is blogging about the latest electric car announcement from
Chrysler: the Jeep Wrangler EV. Touted as the vehicle which pairs trail rating with eco-friendly, the Jeep EV will have the capacity to drive 40 miles on a lithium-ion battery pack, and then continue with a range extender powered by a small four-cylinder internal combustion engine.
For Chevy Volt fans out there, the EREV system on the Jeep closely follows the idea of the e-flex powertrain system from GM. Batteries drive the vehicle until the battery packs are drained to approximately 30%. At that point the internal combustion engine drives a generator to either power the electric motors, recharge the battery pack, or both.
The Motor Trend Blog had news of a release date for the Jeep EV:
Chrysler told us one of the three vehicles it has been demoing (the EV sports car, a version of the Town & Country minivan, and the Wrangler) would be on sale as a 2010 model by late next year (that assumes, of course, Chrysler will still be around next year in its present form). Which one will it be?
