In a surprise move, this morning on the Today show GM's VP of Global Design Ed Welburn teased a production-ready version of the 2011 Chevrolet Beat.
The cover was pulled back to reveal the entire nose of the vehicle and the leading edge of its hood; the mello-yello-hued Chevy looks at first blush to be close in concept and size to the Ford Fiesta, and its styling might be even more swept and dramatic.
The survival of a U.S. version of the Beat is surprising news to many automotive journalists who were told by GM's Bob Lutz that the Chevy Beat concept would not make it to the U.S. market. But apparently GM fans responded, voting the Beat as their favorite concept of a trio of Chevy concepts shown in 2007. GM apparently listened, and next week's Detroit Auto Show is the stage where this production-ready Beat will first be seen by the public.
Automobile Magazine feels that with the Beat being displayed publicly in production form, "chances are high we'll be getting one." One Jalopnik (click the link to watch the TODAY Show clip) commenter felt the Beat's dramatically swept headlights "look inspired by Joan Rivers."
Do you think GM might finally have a viable small car nearly ready for public consumption and strong enough for battle with Honda, Toyota, and Ford?
