Once again, it's time to look at the best deals on green cars for the current month.

As we get further into the 2017 model year, carmakers are working harder to get leftover 2016 models off dealer lots—and to jump-start sales of the new model year—by offering generous incentives.

This month's roundup includes a mix of relatively new models, as well as some that have been on sale for quite a while now.

Hybrids

This month we have a pair of mid-size sedans spanning two generations of Hyundai-Kia hybrid powertrains.

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid gets a $2,500 rebate through September 6, as well as a $1,500 "conquest bonus" for buyers switching from competitor brands.

This is the first model year for the current Sonata Hybrid, and its Kia Optima Hybrid twin is set to receive the same new powertrain when a redesigned 2017 model launches this fall.

For now, though, the outgoing 2016 Kia Optima Hybrid represents a good deal for buyers who want a car right now.

Also through September 6, the 2016 Optima Hybrid is available to lease at $259 per month for 36 months, with and allowance of 12,000 miles per year.

That's with no money down, as the Optima Hybrid now qualifies for Kia's "Sign & Drive" promotion.

Plug-In Hybrids

The 2017 BMW 330e i Performance continues to receive discounts, despite going on sale fairly recently.

Since this plug-in hybrid version of the 3-Series was unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW has added the "i Performance" tag to tie its plug-in hybrids to the "i" family of dedicated plug-in cars.

Like last month, the 330e can be leased for $319 a month for 36 months, with $4,244 due at signing and 10,000 miles per year.

BMW is now trying to lure Tesla customers waiting for that carmaker's 215-mile, $35,000 Model 3 electric car.

A series of ads point out that the 330e is available today, so buyers don't have to wait for the launch of an (unnamed) future electric car.

2016 Nissan Leaf

Electric cars

Amid slowing sales, the 2016 Nissan Leaf is getting a boost in incentives this month.

The Leaf continues with the same lease deal of $199 a month for 36 months and 12,000-mile cap offered in July.

But the down payment on the base Leaf S model has been erased thanks to a new $2,000 bonus.

Note that the Leaf S uses the smaller 24-kilowatt-hour battery pack and has an 84-mile range, while other models have a 30-kWh pack and 107-mile range.

The $2,000 bonus can applied to those higher-priced models, however.

2016 BMW i3

Alternatively, consumers looking to buy can get 0-percent APR financing for 72 months, with $6,000 in incentives.

Meanwhile, the 2016 BMW i3 gets a new, lower lease rate.

At $159 per month for 36 months and $3,584 due at signing, the monthly payment has been cut by $80, and the down payment by $580.

This lease offer includes an allowance of 10,000 miles per year, and lasts through the end of this month.

It also applies only to the battery-electric i3; the range-extended i3 REx leases for $209 per month for 30 months, with $2,634 due at signing.

An updated 2017 i3 will arrive in showrooms soon, boasting a 33-kWh battery pack and a range of 114 miles for the all-electric version.

2016 GMC Canyon

2016 GMC Canyon

Diesel cars

General Motors continues to offer significant discounts on the 2016 GMC Canyon diesel mid-size pickup truck despite strong sales.

The Canyon continues with a $750 rebate and $1,500 "conquest bonus" for buyers switching from non-GM brands through the end of the month.

An offer of 0-percent APR financing for 60 months also carries over. None of these incentives are available on the Canyon's twin, the Chevrolet Colorado.

Both trucks share the 2.8-liter Duramax 4-cylinder diesel engine, and the title of most fuel efficient new truck currently sold in the U.S.

That's thanks to best EPA fuel-economy ratings of 25 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway).

2016 Scion iA

2016 Scion iA

Fuel-efficient gasoline cars

August is the last month for Toyota's Scion "youth brand," so the company is increasing incentives on the iA sedan.

The iA continues with 0-percent APR financing for 60 months, but also gets a $1,000 bonus—up $250 from last month.

A lease offer of $149 per month for 36 months with $1,999 due at signing is also available.

Following the termination of Scion, the iA will live on as the 2017 Toyota Yaris iA, but probably won't represent as good of a deal under the Toyota brand.

Finally, the Chevrolet Sonic is set to receive a major refresh for the 2017 model year, but in the meantime Chevy is trying to clear inventory of 2016 models.

Through August 31, it's offering a flat 16-percent discount on the oldest cars in stock.
