BMW does very well with its sport utility vehicles in North America, which is why they're made in South Carolina.

And with hybrid crossovers and sport utilities coming thick and fast, today saw the official unveiling of the BMW Concept X5 eDrive at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The company had released details of the plug-in hybrid crossover concept three weeks ago, but we've got live photos from the display stand.

The production version of this car will join two hybrid models from Range Rover, and the first luxury crossover hybrid, the Lexus RX.

(Lexus also showed a concept for its upcoming compact Lexus NX crossover at Frankfurt as well.)

The concept uses a plug-in version that's the next generation of BMW's latest single-motor hybrid system, as used in its ActiveHybrid 3, 5, and 7 sedans.

Those vehicles use inline six-cylinder engines, but the X5 plug-in hybrid concept has a turbocharged four of unspecified displacement and power.

A 70-kilowatt (95-horsepower) electric motor sits between the engine and a modified version of BMW's eight-speed automatic transmission, with permanent all-wheel drive fitted.

BMW says the plug-in X5 will travel up to 19 miles on electricity alone, and can achieve speeds of up to 75 mph.

Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is quoted at 7.0 seconds, though using that full power regularly--especially at higher speeds--is bound to cut available electric range significantly.

The car features a "Save Battery" mode that allows the driver to conserve battery charge, running the car purely as a conventional, hybrid, until all-electric operation is required. That might be, for instance, in a central-city zero-emission zone.

The Concept X5 eDrive is otherwise quite close to the conventional third-generation crossover, with its modifications mostly hidden under the skin.

The lithium-ion battery pack is located under the floor of the rear cargo bay, and there's a charge port door built into on the left front fender.

The plug-in hybrid X5 concept car is dressed up with the same blue accents used in the BMW i3 battery electric urban hatchback and the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sport coupe featured on grille slats, air-intake bars, and bumper inlays.

The paint color is Silverlake Metallic (hello, Los Angeles!) and the 21-inch alloy wheels are specially designed to offer minimum aerodynamic drag.

We'll have more live photos of the green concept cars, production cars, and more throughout today and the rest of the week, so be sure to check out all the stories on our Frankfurt Auto Show page.
