While some carmakers go down the entirely electric route and others explore different branches of hybrid technology, Volkswagen is best known for its efforts with turbodiesel engines.
There's only so much you can do with internal combustion however, which is why Volkswagen's Cross Coupe concept, unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday, adds plug-in hybrid technology to the mix.
As a result, the plug-in hybrid, turbodiesel crossover is said to achieve up to 130 miles per gallon on the European cycle.
That's not bad for a vehicle weighing 4,100 pounds, and a combined power output of 302 horsepower should ensure decent performance, too.
The Geneva Cross Coupe follows on from a similar concept unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show. Like the Tokyo car, the Geneva concept should pair a diesel engine with electric motor at the front, and a separate electric motor driving the rear wheels. All-electric range on the Tokyo car was around 25 miles.
