It's the news Jeep fans all across the country have be waiting years for. That one little tidbit execs at Jeep love to deny but no longer can--that the Jeep Grand Cherokee will be offered with an advanced VM Motori turbodiesel engine in the U.S. by 2013.

The information was reportedly revealed straight from the mouth of Fiat-Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is no stranger to diesel power, though the last we saw it here in the U.S. was in 2008. Unlike the previous Daimler-sourced unit, the next diesel in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, as mentioned, will be built by Italy’s VM Motori.

The particular unit, already offered in European versions of the new Grand Cherokee, will be a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine rated at 237 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, the latter of which peaks at just 1,800 and is maintained all the way up to 2,800 rpm.

It should also be around 19 percent more fuel efficient than the last diesel Grand Cherokee, and produce around 20 percent less CO2. Towing capacity is quoted at just over 7,700 pounds, the maximum for any current Grand Cherokee model.

Having driven and enjoyed the last Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0 CRD engine, we're looking forward to the improvements in the new generation.
