General Motors isn’t quite back to the company it once was in its hay day, but it is showing signs of progress and trying to prove it to Wall Street analysts. In an meeting held yesterday with the bank and investment-community analysts, GM talked about their plan to launch 70 new or refreshed models globally by 2014. Sounds like quite a task, even for a giant like GM. Does this mean we will be seeing a lot of changes to the cars here in the States?

The answer to that is not really. GM believes that their largest growth will be in markets outside of the U.S.—a place where it sees most of its growth for the next half decade. However, GM did say that they aren’t going to rely on the truck segment to carry the business and talked up the new Chevrolet Cruze and Volt launches scheduled to come in the near future. There was also mention of the all new Buick Regal and Cadillac CTS Coupe. According to Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, 600 of the new Cadillac CTS Coupes left the Michigan factory this week.

Going back to the launches for a second, GM is planning to launch 14 Opel/Vauxhall models and 13 Chevrolet models by 2014. As part of talk track on their plan the GM executives also showed concepts of the next-generation Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CTS, as well as, the production version of the Cadillac XTS. So what does all this mean? Basically, that GM is trying to change and change quickly so that they can regain the 60 percent of the company that is still owned by the U.S. Treasury. Once they do that, they not only should have consumers behind them, but also have some of the best vehicles on the road—something that has been a hard goal with the quality from imported nameplates like Mercedes and Honda.
