We write a lot about green cars, here at GreenCarReports.com. Surprise, right?

Now our partner TrueCar has provided some data about which cars are greenest. That is, which cars are most often ordered in the color green.

Consider this our automotive celebration of St. Patrick's Day. Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit!

It's long been known that a green paint job is a special taste for car buyers. Year after year, the most popular colors are silver, gray, white, and black. Across all models sold, green cars represent a mere 2 percent of the total.

The single most popular green car, it turns out, is the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser, that company's low-volume 4x4 rock-climbing competitor for the 2010 Jeep Wrangler (which came in fifth).

TrueCar's data shows that fully 23 percent of FJs came in green, more than any other vehicle (although, frankly, we tend to see them most often in bright blue or yellow).

As you might expect from such an outdoorsy brand, Subaru has two models in the Top Five Greenest Cars: The 2010 Forester comes in at second place, with 21 percent, and the 2010 Outback in fourth place, at 12 percent.

Third place is the 2010 Honda Odyssey, at 15 percent, and the Jeep Wrangler takes fifth, at 9 percent.

The next five greenest cars all came in between 6 and 8 percent: They're the 2010 models of the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord Crosstour, Toyota Highlander, Honda CR-V, and Ford Fusion.

Interestingly, eight of the ten are crossovers or SUVs, with only the Camry and Fusion being regular sedans.

The data is from TrueCar, which sources actual U.S. sales transaction data for more than 43 percent of all new vehicles sold, according to the company. The data comes from car dealers and aggregators, and it's used by TheCarConnection.com in our new-car shopping area.

With this analysis, we wish you a Happy Paddy's Day on Wednesday, and encourage you to hoist a few pints of Guinness Stout or other beverage of choice. NOT, please, while driving.

Full disclosure: Your author owns a 2000 Subaru Outback in a very fetching shade of dark green.
