2011 Ford Fiesta sedan

Have you ever noticed that car companies will put models out that have both a hatchback and sedan version? In some cases it is hard to tell why, like with the previous generation Mazda 6 where they had the sedan and the lift-back version. The two cars where almost unintelligible, which begged the question as to why they tooled up to have to models. That all said, the 2011 Ford Fiesta is the latest small car from Ford and, by no coincidence, exhibits this hatchback/sedan quality. In the case of one model with two major body style options we have to ask, which one is better?

Recently, I drove the 2011 Ford Fiesta (see my driven article) and was impressed by the small cars quality, options, and interior room. Which version did I drive? The hatchback, of course. The hatchback seems to be the start of the show with the sedan being the not so popular cousin. In fact, if we were going to look at this in a high school perspective, the hatchback would be the popular one while the sedan was the nerdy sister. That said, the two cars are identical from a engine, transmission and suspension perspective. The biggest difference, besides cargo space, is that the sedan is the only model that comes in the base S trim. Yes, that is the $13K entry-level trim.

This is totally a judgment call from the view of a twenty-something male, but I think if you are considering the Fiesta you have to rock the hatchback. The hatch just has a quality about it that makes it edgy, youthful and fun. The sedan has that grandma’s Hyundai like quality—I should know, I have my grandma’s Hyundai. Figures doesn’t it, to be cool you will just have to shell out some more cash for the hot hatch.
