Later this year Mitsubishi’s battery-powered i-MiEV will finally go on sale in the U.S., having already gone on sale in Europe and Japan and making an appearence at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show last November. However, it’s hard to get excited over Mitsubishi’s zero-emission minicar with the likes of the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt already in showrooms, but new information revealed by Mitsubishi is sure to get any green car fan’s heart pumping.

As part of its “Jump 2013” mid-term business plan, Mitsubishi has confirmed that it will launch eight new electrified vehicles by 2015. This will include hybrids and plug-in hybrids as well as battery-powered electric cars. Mitsubishi won’t be neglecting its conventional models either, as there are plans to develop a next-generation MIVEC gasoline engine and new clean-diesels.

Some specific green models in the pipeline include an electric commercial vehicle for Japan, which should arrive later this year, as well as a new plug-in hybrid to be sold in the U.S. next year. There’s also the production version of the PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid SUV, which we previously reported would go on sale in 2013.

Additional models will include a medium or large electric sedan, as well as an electric version of Mitsubishi’s next-generation compact car, which was revealed in concept form earlier this week.

Interestingly, to achieve its ambitious green goals, Mitsubishi is forming alliance with rival automakers, one of which is Nissan.
