The Model S is Tesla Motors new mid-sized 7-seat 4-door electric car that was unveiled today in Los Angeles California at the Space-X rocket factory.

The vehicle will be priced at $57,400 so that with the US government $7500 tax credit could cost its owners $49,990. It will have a 160 mile all electric driving range and the ability to rapidly charge in 2 hours at 440v. Launch is anticipated in third quarter 2011 as long as Tesla can fund and build the assembly plant. 20,000 units will be produced in the first model year.

There will be two battery upgrade options, one for 230 miles and one for 300, the latter uses 8000 individual lithium-ion cells.

Top speed is 130 MPH and the car will do 0 to 80 in 5.5 seconds. There are two LCD touch screens which eliminate all buttons in the car.
